The Passing of William S.W. Lim

Singaporean architect, William S.W. Lim has passed away at the age of 90. 

Lim was the first President of the Singapore Heritage Society. Together with Kwa Chong Guan, Sharon Siddique and Geraldene Lowe, Lim founded the society in April 1987 with the expressed aim of alerting the government and the public on the urgent need to conserve Singapore’s heritage.

His tenure as President lasted until 1997 and during his presidency, the society organised conferences, public talks and also produced a series of publications such as Pages from Yesteryear: A Look at the Printed Works of Singapore, 1819 – 1959, Living Legacy: Singapore’s Architectural Heritage Renewed. The society under his leadership also published a 1992 report for the then Minister for Information and the Arts George Yeo on establishing a heritage trust in Singapore.

Lim was also a renowned architect who designed two iconic modernist buildings in Singapore. The first was the People’s Park Complex which was completed in 1972 and the second was the Golden Mile Complex which was completed in 1973.
