Fukushima Traditional Pottery Shop and Atelier

June 22, 2022

Located in Fukushima, Japan, Matsunaga Kiln produces a Japanese traditional pottery craft known as Obori Soma Ware with more than 300 years of history. Ten years after the 2011 Great Japanese Earthquake that had demolished the old property, the manufacturer is ready for a fresh new start. Hence, they commissioned Naoya Tochio and Teruo Akiyama from to-ripple inc. to design their new facility.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of Obori Soma Ware is its double structure which enables this everyday ceramic to retain boiling hot water and prevent it from cooling. The designers wanted to include this feature where different scales of architecture and ceramics can influence each other in the same composition. This results in the roadside workshop containing two houses which are surrounded by a larger facade to form a double structure. Through this concept, the designers hope visitors can experience the double-structured space to grasp the characteristics of the ceramics.

An overhead light is installed at the high-illuminated ceiling to bring soft light into the interior space through the shoji screens. It also delivers accurate and vibrant colours which can improve workmanship. Besides, the overhead light can alter the impression of the shop counter’s backdrop.

The inner houses serve specific purposes such as the potter’s wheel room and the kiln room, while the rest would perform as a pottery shop and a gallery to display pottery works. Exposing the wooden beams and pillars makes the interior look wider and airy, so craftsmen could perform their pottery craft in an open space. Moreover, guests can witness the production process while still having a great shopping experience.
