Archihope Sustainable BMW Intelligent Exhibition Hall

November 16, 2023

Archihope designed a sustainable intelligent exhibition hall project for BMW in Changsha, situated in the Yuelu district. Taking inspiration from contemporary urban planning, Archihope’s designers fused a radial design concept into the spatial layout, with the objective of establishing a holistic urban ecosystem and promote sustainable development. Archihope artfully integrated diverse road views and public landscapes to manifest the tangible vision of the city of the future.

At night night, visitors will be treated to a futuristic spectacle of illuminating light effects generated by innovative, sensor-driven lighting fixtures. These cutting-edge lights, shifting between vibrant red and cool blue hues, create an immersive experience, evoking the sensation of navigating through a virtual realm. This innovative fusion of spatial context and intelligent technology echoes the pioneering ethos central to the BMW brand.

Strolling across the tranquil courtyard on water-surfaced stepping stones, one will arrive at the central area of the exhibition hall, which showcases a sunken design. Here, the designers have masterfully blended elements of a pocket park and a book bar, employing landscape design techniques to recreate the allure found in traditional freehand landscape paintings.

The circular sunken layout greatly enhances the field of vision, allowing visitors to take in a panoramic display of the entire car series while enjoying the surrounding cityscape from the comfort of the book bar.

This project prioritises the repurposing of existing structures, infrastructure, and materials, including the use of recycled wood veneers, paper tubes, eco-friendly particle boards, and various other recycled materials in the construction process. This approach fosters a dynamic and evolving space within the modern building and landscape.

Echoing Patrick Geddes’ vision of cities, which should be “interspersed with green leaves in the golden light,” the layout of this sunlit exhibition hall showcases a vibrant streetscape representing the future city. Along this path, one will encounter various scenes, such as bus stops, flower shops, pocket parks, and cafes, each artfully designed to complement the themes and styles of different car series. This meticulous attention to detail results in a cohesive urban architectural system spread across 15,000 square metres.

Rocks discreetly exude a rustic charm, while strategically placed flowers and trees infuse life into the surroundings. The design concept aligns with the modern urban construction principle of establishing an ecological recycling system, with the extensive use of logs throughout the space emphasising a seamless connection to natural textures. Distinctive, elegantly styled chairs in the guest resting area mimic tree rings, expanding the natural imagery dimension while highlighting a contemporary design aesthetic. Abundant greenery  creates a landscape garden-like atmosphere.

To facilitate visitor movement, the design thoughtfully extends lines from the ground, crafting a hollowed-out ceiling that serves as a visual guide for customers. The design’s objective is to expand the exhibition hall space in all dimensions, with the semi-open, sky-reaching ceiling forming a central “world tree” image, around which branches intertwine and connect, unifying all sections of the space in a symbiotic, interconnected manner.
